Past Perfect Continuous Conversation Questions: Short Answers vs. Better Answers

A grammatically correct answer does not always make a good conversation.

Consider this question:

  • How long had you been waiting before the bus arrived?
Short Answer

I had been waiting for thirty minutes.

Better Answer

I had been waiting for about thirty minutes before the bus arrived. It was quite cold, and I was beginning to think the bus wasn’t coming.

That first answer is correct, but the second gives the listener more information and creates opportunities for another question.

A Useful Speaking Pattern

Try this:

Past perfect continuous + duration + later event + extra detail

For example:

  • I had been working for five hours before I took a break. I was getting tired, so I decided to go outside for a few minutes.

This pattern is especially useful for learners who know the grammar but struggle to produce longer spoken answers.

Common Mistakes in Past Perfect Continuous Conversation

1

Leaving out “been”

❌I had working for three hours.
✅I had been working for three hours.
The complete structure is:
had + been + verb-ing
2

Using the simple past after “had been”

❌She had been worked there for years.
✅She had been working there for years.
The verb after had been must normally be in the -ing form.
3

Using “was” instead of “had been”

❌I was studying for three hours before the exam started.
✅I had been studying for three hours before the exam started.
The second sentence makes the earlier duration clearer.
4

Forgetting the duration when it matters

❌I had been studying before the exam.
✅I had been studying for three hours before the exam.
The first sentence is grammatically possible, but the second makes better use of the continuous form because it emphasizes duration.

Using the tense without a relevant past reference point

The past perfect continuous normally relates an earlier ongoing activity to another past time or event.

Less usefulI had been studying English.
ClearerI had been studying English for two years before I moved to England.
The second sentence gives the listener a clear past reference point.

Confusing “for” and “since”

Use for — a period of time
