Quick answer Present perfect continuous conversation questions are speaking prompts answered with has/have + been + verb-ingHow long have you been learning English? / I’ve been learning for three years. They describe activities that began earlier and are still running, or that stopped so recently the result is still showing.

An example before you start

Q

How long have you been living in this city?

A

I‘ve been living here for six years. I moved after I finished college.

The six signal words, sorted by the job they do

Measure the length
forsincehow long

For takes a stretch of time, since takes a starting point, and how long is the question that asks for either.

Point at a recent period
latelyrecently

These do not measure anything. They set a loose frame around the near past: What have you been doing lately?

Name one long stretch
all day

Also all morning, all week. These carry a hint of effort or tiredness, which is why they suit this tense so well.

Two mistakes to avoid from your very first answer

Both appear constantly in spoken answers, and both are worth fixing before the question lists start.

❌ I have waiting for an hour.
✅ I have been waiting for an hour.
❌ I have been knowing him for years.
✅ I have known him for years.

The first drops been, which can never be left out. The second uses a stative verbknow, like, believe, own, understand — and those describe a state rather than an activity, so they take the plain present perfect instead. This is the single most common error in conversation, because for years tempts learners straight into the continuous.

Speaking tip: contract it, except in a short answer

Out loud, almost nobody says I have been working. They say I’ve been working. The same goes for he’s been, she’s been, we’ve been, they’ve been.

One exception you will need immediately: a positive short answer never contracts. Yes, I have is correct; Yes, I’ve is not a sentence. The negative does contract — No, I haven’t.

Why this tense is worth practising out loud

Most learners can build the form on paper and still avoid it in speech, falling back on I am working here since 2019 or I work here since 2019. Neither is English. The tense that carries duration up to now is this one, and the only way it becomes automatic is answering how long questions until the four pieces arrive together without thinking.

Warm-up: four questions before you begin

Check the shape before the question lists start.

Correct so far: 0 of 4

1. How long have you been studying English?

2. You met your friend in 2015 and still know him. Say so.

3. Choose the right word: I’ve been working here ______ March.

4. Have you been waiting long? — you have.

Before you start the question lists

  • Four pieces, none optional: has/have + been + verb + -ing.
  • For measures a length, since names a starting point, how long asks for either.
  • Stative verbs — know, like, believe, own, understand — stay in the plain present perfect.
  • Speak the contractions: I’ve been, she’s been, they’ve been.
  • Positive short answers stay full: Yes, I have.
