Nouns That Start With X (Common, Proper, Abstract & Concrete Nouns)
X turns up less often than almost any other letter at the start of an English word. What it does give you, though, is a small set of precise nouns — the kind that appear in science, medicine, music, and technology, where no other word will quite do.
An X-noun is simply a noun that begins with the letter X — xylophone, X-ray, xenon, xerox, or xylem.
- xylophone music
- X-ray medicine
- xenon science
- xerox office
- xylem biology
Because there are so few of them, learning X-nouns is less about volume and more about recognition. Meet each one properly and you will spot it every time it appears in a textbook, a lab report, or a music lesson.
Quick Challenge
Choose the correct X-noun to complete the sentence:
The doctor used an blank to check whether the bone was broken.
See the answer
B. X-ray. An X-ray is the imaging technique doctors use to look at bones and other parts of the body, so it is the only option that fits the sentence.
All four choices are nouns, by the way — the question is testing whether you know what each one names, not whether it is a noun.
There is also a clue hiding in the sentence: it says an, not a. At the start of a word, X is usually pronounced like a Z, so we say a xylophone, a xenon lamp, a xylem cell. But the letter X on its own is said “ex”, which begins with a vowel sound — so it has to be an X-ray.

Quick Tip: Three X Names Worth a Closer Look
- Xerox / xerox — capital X for the company. Many people write a xerox or xerox it for photocopying in general, and dictionaries record that use, but the company name itself always keeps its capital.
- Xi'an — that apostrophe is not decoration. It separates the two syllables, Xi and an, so the name is not misread as the single syllable Xian.
- X — the social media platform renamed from Twitter in 2023. A single capital letter now works as a full proper noun, which is rare in English.
Country Names That Start with X
There Are None
No country in the world begins with the letter X. Of the 193 member states of the United Nations, not one has a name starting with X in English — the only letter, along with W, with no country to its name.
Three near-misses come up often enough to be worth clearing up:
- Xinjiang is an autonomous region of China, not a country of its own.
- Xia was an early Chinese dynasty — a state in its time, but not a nation on any modern map.
- Mexico hides an X, and in older Spanish spelling it was written México with the x sounded like a rough h. The X is in the middle, though, so the country still files under M.
Place Names That Start with X
X is thin on ordinary nouns but generous with place names, and they cluster in two parts of the world: China, where pinyin spelling gives X its own sound, and Mexico, where the X comes down from Nahuatl. A few European towns join in.

Common Mistakes When Using X-Nouns
X causes one problem no other letter does — the choice between a and an — and then the usual troubles with capitals, plurals, and words that cannot be counted.
-
Incorrect: The nurse booked me a X-ray for Monday.
Correct: The nurse booked me an X-ray for Monday.
Why? The choice depends on sound, not spelling. The letter X is said "ex", which opens with a vowel sound, so it takes an.
-
Incorrect: She plays an xylophone in the school band.
Correct: She plays a xylophone in the school band.
Why? At the start of a word, X is pronounced like a Z — "zy-lo-phone". That is a consonant sound, so it takes a. The same goes for a xenon lamp and a xylem cell.
-
Incorrect: Our tour of xi'an lasted three days.
Correct: Our tour of Xi'an lasted three days.
Why? Xi'an is a proper noun, so the X is always a capital. Keep the apostrophe too — it separates the syllables Xi and an so the name is not read as one.
-
Incorrect: The music room has four xylophone.
Correct: The music room has four xylophones.
Why? Xylophone is a regular countable noun. Once you put a number in front of it, the plural -s has to follow.
-
Incorrect: The headlights contain two xenons.
Correct: The headlights contain xenon.
Why? Xenon is a gas, and gases are uncountable. You can measure an amount — a small quantity of xenon — but the word itself takes no plural.
-
Incorrect: Water travels up through the xylems.
Correct: Water travels up through the xylem.
Why? Xylem names a tissue rather than separate objects, so it stays singular — like bone in "made of bone" or timber.
-
Incorrect: Please Xerox these forms before the meeting.
Correct: Please photocopy these forms before the meeting.
Why? Xerox with a capital X is a company. Using it for copying in general is common in speech, and dictionaries record it, but formal writing prefers photocopy — and the company name itself never loses its capital.
-
Incorrect: The dentist compared my two xray.
Correct: The dentist compared my two X-rays.
Why? Two things went wrong at once. The word needs its hyphen and capital — X-ray — and a countable noun after two needs its plural -s.
